Research Experience

2015: Vanderbilt Anesthesiology and Perioperative Informatics Research Division, Summer Intern, Nashville, Tennessee

  • Worked under the supervision of Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD and Jonathan Wanderer, MD in the Vanderbilt Anesthesiology and Perioperative Informatics Research Division. Intern responsibilities included generating written scientific output, studying perioperative outcomes in the context of surgical information management, participating in didactic sessions, and developing code to address clinical research problems. The purpose of the primary research project was to use informatics to analyze the impact of a health record standardization intervention on clinicians in a preoperative clinic. Specific responsibilities included writing the manuscript, coordinating team members, and submitting the final product to targeted journals. This work is currently in press in the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing. I also presented work related to these findings at a research forum at East Tennessee State University as well as to faculty members of the Department of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University.

2014: Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Department of Anesthesiology, Capstone Internship, Nashville, Tennessee

  • Worked full-time for the Department of Anesthesiology under the supervision of Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD and Jonathan Wanderer, MD to fulfill the capstone internship as part of my undergraduate major. Responsibilities for the internship included analyzing and compiling perioperative surgical data using a data query language, creating work flow diagrams and operational processes for improved clinical efficiency in preoperative facilities and holding rooms, and researching the success of surgical interventions. Lead a research project that measured an intervention to reduce inappropriate preoperative chest x-ray ordering. In this project, my responsibilities included conducting a quantitative analysis of the clinical data, writing the abstract, and preparing a poster to be presented at a later conference. I presented this research at the EasternAtlantic Student Research Forum in Miami, FL. The work was also presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.
